Duty to care

Every member of the Open Canoe Association has a duty to care for other members, and in return should expect a duty of care from the membership. It’s core to how 500 disparate and unique folk can gather, paddle, learn and get along.

Sounds complicated? That’s alright, let’s break it down.

Diversity and Inclusion

At the OCA we believe in paddling for all – that means we aim for Diversity and Inclusion in our membership and in our paddling. Not every paddle and event can be ideal for everyone, but we aim to meet our membership where they are, and open our doors to any paddler who wants to join. You can read more about how BC supports this at this link

Safeguarding

Any large group needs guidance to help us interact healthily and safely. And in these modern days we need to cover how we interact online and well as in person. The data we hold and process is also important to be managed well.

We have several policies that guide both our organisation and our members in our actions, behaviour and what to do when something goes wrong. Please take a look.

Safety and managed risk on the water

We need to protect our members and ensure we are safe to paddle and have adventures. We always use British Canoeing qualified and up to date on-the-water leaders, please respect their direction and decisions, and listen to their advice. In 2024 we will introduce a new Safety Structure for the OCA.
