Activity and Equipment guide

To make our events safe for all, there are a number of requirements we need to make paddling participants aware of. These are based on our activity risk assessments.

Boat outfitting

  • All canoes must be built or fitted with sufficient buoyancy to float when capsized.
  • On tidal/graded water, open water and lakes, all boats must have positive flotation securely fitted at each end or in the centre. Boats on canals need not have extra flotation.
  • All boats are to be free of loops, rope or thwarts which can cause entrapment. Grab loops must be small enough to prevent access by the hand. All ropes must be free of knots.

On-the-water leaders have the authority to refuse to take any boat not safely equipped.

Paddler clothing and kit

  • All participants are recommended to wear CE Standard Buoyancy Aid / Personal Floatation Device (BA/PFD).
  • On graded water, weirs and chutes, paddlers should wear properly fitting and secured helmets.
  • Suitable footwear is required, of a type that doesn’t impede a quick exit and, ideally providing toe protection.

On-the-water leaders have the authority to refuse anyone who wears an inappropriate clothing, BA/PFD, or helmet or refuses to wear one.

Trip advice

  • Ensure you eat before your trip starts.
  • Carry a drink to remain hydrated and bring snacks, and lunch, if a day trip.
  • A waterproof, clothing layers and spares are recommended to avoid under/overheating, and dealing with the British Summertime weather.
  • Carrying Sunscreen even when the day starts off raining is useful for the same reason.
  • We are all more practiced at using hand cleanser – we recommend using some, or washing hands with soap and water, after paddling and before eating
  • if you have a medical issue, be sure to tell your leader before the trip begins, and do take your medication with you.

On-the-water Leadership

  • All organised trips will be led by Paddle UK qualified leaders, who are first aid trained. Their job is to manage groups to safely support adventure. They can provide advice on good boat set-up.
  • Paddler numbers will be managed in accordance with Paddle UK guidelines
