I plan to run an open canoe North East Scotland White Water Rivers week-long expedition Saturday 24th March to Monday 2nd April, starting driving north on Friday 23rd March after work: N.B. This includes the Easter bank holiday weekend allowing 10 days (including travelling), for 4 days holiday from work. We will be paddling loaded boats on multi-day journeys on rivers with white water rapids, and wild camping along the way.
Prerequisite skills: Participants will need to be a strong 3 star open canoe level personal proficiency standard paddler. If you are not sure what this means, please see https://www.britishcanoeing.org.uk/go-canoeing/build-my-skills/#star-awards . You will need to be comfortable paddling grade 2 rapids in a loaded open canoe with a weeks' worth of expedition gear. The trip is being run on a lead/guided basis and coaching is not offered as part of the expedition, so you will need to have the prerequisite skills to participate in the trip. N.B. The focus will be on expeditionning/journeying and not stopping to coach in rapids for extended periods. That is not to say that you won't embed your skills and improve them during the expedition.
Exactly what we paddle will depend on water levels and the river conditions at the time, but the Rivers Dee (Royal Dee) and Don, which both flow into Aberdeen offer a potential of nearly 200 Km between them. We may also paddle other white water rivers in the North East of Scotland if time permits, and/or water levels prevent us paddling the upper reaches of the Dee and Don.
I will be running a number of grade 2 open canoe days over the winter so you will be able to get some practice before the trip if you are a bit rusty.
I am limited to the number of people that I can lead for safety/supervision ratio purposes - places will fill on a first come, first served basis. I can lead a ratio of 1:4 solo participants/1:6 tandem participants. If another leader/coach joins me, qualified to lead open canoe at the appropriate level, I can allow additional people onto the expedition.
BOOKING ONTO TRIPS
Please DO NOT click "Going" and expect a place on a trip, as this is not part of my booking system and is not under my control. Places are limited for safety/supervision purposes. You will need to contact me directly (firstname.lastname@example.org or personal message on Facebook) and then I will advise if I have any places left and if I am able to allocate you a place.
