Canoefest 2017

Since meeting lots of you at Canoefest in May this year and taking over as Chairman, time has moved on at an alarming rate. For many of you we’ve met up at various events over the summer and I’m sure you’ve all had many and varied paddling trips of your own. It’s great to hear about them and see the photos. If you’ve not already found our facebook page, go and have a look. There’s great things happening and being shared almost every day.

It may seem to some that the committee have been pretty quiet. That’s far from the truth as lots of work, thoughts and plans are being worked on. Most of which we need help from you to make happen a little quicker. More of that later.

Canoefest 2016, being our 60th Anniversary, was a resounding success. Lots of very kind feedback and letters of thanks were gratefully received and very much appreciated. We’ve been giving lots of thought to Canoefest 2017 and how we can make attractive to even more paddlers and their families. We are now able to announce the dates and venue.

Canoefest 2017 will take place over two weekends. With paddling opportunities during the week between.

Friday 26th to Monday 29th May                  Venue Hay-on-Wye, in conjunction with Hay Literary Festival

Tuesday 30th May to Thursday 1st June      Lead or self-supported mulit-day trips on river Wye

Friday 2nd  to Sunday 4th June                   Venue: Beale Park, Lower Basildon, Reading, in conjunction with Beale Park Boat and Outdoor Show

We appreciate this is a change of date and format. We hope you will see this as a look to the future. A way to grow and engage with more likeminded people. For most is half term so we hope the change of date and with many associated things going on at both venues, families will be attracted.

You will be able to book for the whole event, or choose which appeals to you. The AGM will probably take place over the first weekend.

I’m sure you can appreciate; planning two events at different venues is going to take a bit of putting together. I’d like to appeal to everyone to offer some help in the organisation. I’m sure, with lots of help and hard work, Canoefest 2017 will be and event to remember for years. If you would like to be involved in helping make this happen.

I'll certainly like to attend the first weekend with my wife Jax and I look forward to joining some sessions on and off the water.  We'll stay on for a few days too, probably having to leave around Wednesday.

Cheers

I will be there for both weekends and will be wearing both my OCA Cap and my WCHA Hat. I will bring along a collection of wooden canoes and also various publications for people to look through. If I can get hold of it I will also aim to bring along the MacGregor Exhibition which I am sure many will find to be of interest.

I am planning to be at the fest over the full week.  I'll be coming along as a WCHA member and as a professional wooden canoe builder.  www.valkyriecrat.com.  I would hope to have at least two wooden boats with me.
