Canoefest 2017

BOOK NOW HERE

Building on the success of last year’s Canoefest, this year is promising to be even bigger and better. It will take place over two weekends. With paddling opportunities during the week in between.

This is a member’s only event. Please ensure your membership is current before booking.

Friday 26th to Monday 29th May                  Venue Want to Canoe? Racquety Farm, Hay-on-Wye,

Tuesday 30th May to Thursday 1st June      Lead or self-supported multi-day trips on river Wye

Thursday 1st  to Sunday 4th June                   Venue: Beale Park, Lower Basildon, Reading, in conjunction with Beale Park Boat and Outdoor Show

You can choose to attend one of the weekends, or both. There will be plenty going on for families and non-paddlers so should be a real opportunity to involve the whole family.

Our hosts at Hay-on-Wye are Want to Canoe? They will be supporting us throughout as well as running ‘Go Canoeing’ sessions and canoe hire for visitors to their site.

Hay-on-Wye will take on a similar pattern to last year with coaching sessions and trips on Saturday, Sunday morning and Monday. Sunday afternoon will be site based with lots of opportunities to try out different boats, and have some fun and games both on and off the water. There will be a Ceilidh on Sunday evening. Food is optional but you will need to book in advance.

The Hay Literary Festival is taking place at the same time. If you fancy a break from paddling a shuttle  bus is operating to and from the centre of town for a small fee. (This is not operated by OCA)

The second weekend at Beale Park will focus on flat water ‘freestyle’ paddling with opportunities to paddle with style. This, along with beginners’ sessions and Thames river trips should make for a great weekend. You will also have access to the Boat and Outdoor show. We will be operating a programme of activities from Thursday lunchtime.

All activities are included in the price. There will be some advanced sessions available at extra cost at Beale Park. More information available soon. There may be parking charges when shuttles are involved and a launch fee payable on the day al Llangorse Lake.

You can book sessions on arrival, rather than pre-booking. This will give us flexibility to change offerings depending on conditions and coaches availability. If there’s something you really want to do, drop us an email and we will do our best to include it in the programme.

Both venues will have portaloos and gas powered mobile shower units. Dogs are permitted but must be on a lead at all times.

Booking is now live. I would urge you to book early. Last year lots of people left it to the last minute and were disappointed to miss out.

I'll certainly like to attend the first weekend with my wife Jax and I look forward to joining some sessions on and off the water.  We'll stay on for a few days too, probably having to leave around Wednesday.

Cheers

I will be there for both weekends and will be wearing both my OCA Cap and my WCHA Hat. I will bring along a collection of wooden canoes and also various publications for people to look through. If I can get hold of it I will also aim to bring along the MacGregor Exhibition which I am sure many will find to be of interest.

I am planning to be at the fest over the full week.  I'll be coming along as a WCHA member and as a professional wooden canoe builder.  www.valkyriecrat.com.  I would hope to have at least two wooden boats with me.

Price's

John Edney's picture

Hello Gary. I hope you don't mind me asking, but as I'm new to the OCA could you please explain to me why there is £30 difference between paddling and non paddler. From what I understand the paddles are per' led paddles, not coach led. As I say sorry for asking, but I was just wandering. Thank you, John.

Canoefest Prices

Gary Rice's picture

Hi John,

canoefest coaching workshops and trips are all run by coaches or 4&5* leaders.

we rely heavily on our contacts amongst the best coaches in the country and abroad to give their time to support the event.

We support them with modest expenses and feed and water them during the event.

there will be an array of coaching sessions and trips available. Our focus is on building people's confidence and skills to experience extended journeying canoeing. To build on what you already know and help develop that further.

the 'non-paddler' pricing is aimed at partners who might like to join us for the weekend but have little or no interest in the paddling.

With Canoefest running at the same time as the Hay Festival there should be plenty on offer for partners.

We will be encouraging peer paddling during the week between the weekend activities. We will try and help with shuttles for those wanting to do this and we're making no charge for these.

hope this helps.

Gary
