Canoefest 2018 Hay-on-Wye

For 2018, the OCA Canoefest will return to the banks of the River Wye at Hay. We will be hosted by Aubrey and Clare from Want to Canoe. If you went to the event last year we camped on Rackety Farm land, this year we will be adjacent to this and within the Want to Canoe? enclosure.

BOOK HERE

This is a member’s only event. Please ensure your membership is current before booking.

Membership is only £15 for an individual or £25 for a family per year.

Friday 25th to Monday 28th May                  Venue: Want to Canoe? Hay on Wye

There will be plenty going on for families and non-paddlers so should be a real opportunity to involve the whole family.

Our hosts at Hay-on-Wye are Want to Canoe? They will be supporting us throughout as well as running ‘Go Canoeing’ sessions and canoe hire for visitors to their site.

We are thrilled that Paul Villecourt will be joining us at Canoefest this year along with our confirmed special guests, Ray Goodwin and Lina Patel. They will be supported by a host of coaches and volunteers providing river trips and workshops throughout Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The Hay-on-Wye event will take on a similar pattern to the last 2 years with coaching sessions and trips on Saturday, Sunday morning and Monday. Sunday afternoon will be site based with lots of opportunities to try out different boats, and have some fun and games both on and off the water. We have also included a wellbeing focus at the event. There will be a Ceilidh on Sunday evening. Food is optional but you will need to book in advance.

Our event coincides with the start of The Hay Literary Festival. If you fancy a break from paddling it is only a short walk from the site and a shuttle bus is operating to and from the centre of town for a small fee. (This is not operated by OCA)

You can book sessions on arrival, rather than pre-booking. This will give us flexibility to change offerings depending on conditions and availability of coaches. If there’s something you really want to do, drop us an email and we will do our best to include it in the programme.

The venues will have portable toilets and gas powered mobile showers. Dogs are permitted but must be on a lead at all times, there are free range chickens so we do not want any mishaps!

Aubrey and Clare have also kindly offered camping facilities free to anyone attending the event and wishing to stay on for a few days.

Booking is now live. I would urge you to book early. Last year lots of people left it to the last minute and were disappointed to miss out we will aim to close booking by May 16th or earlier if we have reached our limits.

Hi, we are interested in this, are there further details of the event at all as we have never attended before?  I see it is now the same weekend as the actual 'Hay Festival', it will be a busy weekend in Hay on Wye that weekend :)

Hello Dawn,

Colin Lutley's picture

Hello Dawn,

There is a meeting at Hay this very weekend, some of the committee are there to finalise some details.

We will shortly be giving out more information.

In general Canoefest is a great family friendly canoeing and social event.

There will be workshops to learn new skills or refine skills you already have along with led trips on different parts of local rivers, mainly the wye.

It is a great way to make new canoe friends and meet up with old friends in the future.

We were at Hay at the same time last year.  Canoefest usually moves around the country but sometimes stays at one venue for a couple of years.

The venue is on the opposite side of the river to the town.  The traffic coming and going from our venue wasn't a problem and when walking around town it had a great 'feel' to it.

More information coming soon.

Dawn. Canoefest is an annual event hosted by the OCA. for 2018 we have agreed to return to Hay on Wye. We will be sited on the "Want to Canoe" field adjacent to the bridge in Hay. You are correct, this will be a busy weekend in Hay!

We should have the booking on the website very soon, we are just finalising some of the arrangements, but what we will be offering is a camping venue from Friday 25th May 2018 to Monday 28th May, althought Clare and Aubrey from Want to Canoe has said that people can stay onsite longer if they wish at no additional charge.

The OCA will  provide and lead full day and half day trips that will suit all ages and abilities. There will be workshops to improve a range of skill sets and if what we have in mind does not meet all your needs, just ask as we may be able to provide that too.

Workshops are bookable at the event as it will always be water, weather and safety dependant. The OCA's AGM will take place over the weekend and we will have a Celidh on the Sunday evening. a simple bar (beer & cider) will also be provided.

if you have any more questions or concerns just post here & we can pick them up.

Do I need to book a camping space or is it assumed as I've booked all 3 days I'll be camping?

It will be assumed you're camping.

If you prefer to find your own offsite accomodation, that's fine, but no reduction unless you had booked three day tickets.

The booking form says : All these options include camping for 3 nights (more if you want to stay a bit longer) All workshops, coaching, trips are included. Bank based sessions are open to non-paddlers. So im guessing spaces are booked as part of this?

Hi Mike,

I'm not quite sure what your question is but to try and clarify.

If you book an adult place at £75, you get camping for three nights (more if required) Access to all workshops, coachine and trips bank or water based. Basically everything.

You will be able to book sessions when you get there. Some will have limited places but run more than once. Others may be drop in sessions.

If you book as an adult non-paddler, you get the camping as above and access to land based sessions.

Hope this helps

Hi, does the £75 for the three days cover the cost of camping at the venue and is there any restriction on the size of tent that can be taken (along with a car)?

Additional question

Kirston Elton's picture

Sorry...an additional question, I am 2/3 star at Canoe but additional party with me is pretty much beginner on canoe, although they have done tandem with me several times and have some basic skills. Will there be anything for them at Canoe fest for them to learn and develop or do river trips with/without me as tadem?

Hi Kirston.

Alan Mellor's picture

Hi Kirston.

There are no size restrictions, we will help allocate sufficient space for you.

We can help with beginners & will signpost youbto suitable trips and help with developing skills either with a small group or, if required, some 1-1 tuition. The cost of attending will also cover your trips and coaching.

See you there.
